Parking Lots & Entrances

Accessible parking spaces are one of the most visible aspects of ADA compliance—but do you know how many you need?

Minimum Spaces:

  • 1 accessible space for parking lots with 25 or fewer spaces

  • 2 accessible spaces for lots with 50 or fewer spaces

Van Accessibility:

  • At least one of every eight accessible spaces must be van-accessible

  • Van spaces require an 8-foot access aisle and 98-inch vertical clearance

Signage:

  • Each accessible space must display the International Symbol of Accessibility

  • Van-accessible spaces must include a “Van Accessible” sign

Entrances:

  • At least one entrance must be fully accessible
  • Provide directional signage to guide visitors to accessible entrances

Indoor Spaces & Doors

Accessibility doesn’t stop at the door—your interior layout matters too.

Doorways:

    • Minimum 36-inch width for all entryways

    • Use lever-style or loop handles—avoid knobs, thumb latches, or turnstiles

Aisles & Maneuverability:

  • 36-inch wide aisles with extra space at corners

  • 60-inch turning space for 180-degree turns, or 36-inch T-turns

Checkout Counters:

    • At least 36 inches long and 36 inches high

    • For grocery-style aisles, one in every four aisles must be accessible

Alternative Access:

    • If physical modifications aren’t possible, staff assistance and auxiliary solutions must be available
